Here We Come 2009

Wednesday, December 31, 2008

To say the least this has been a wild a year. Between sports and music this year has been up to par. Lets hope 09 has as much in store for us as 08 did. Happy and Healthy New Year to you all. I hope all your dreams and expectations come true for you in this new year, change is coming and we must be ready, and as Obama says, "Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek."

On that note once again happy and healthy new year to you all and good luck

Cubs Trade DeRosa to Indians for Minor Leaguers

ESPN.com reports that the Cubs have traded Mark DeRosa to the Indians for three undisclosed players.

Chicago set up the move by signing Aaron Miles to a two-year contract Wednesday morning, but he's a major downgrade from DeRosa offensively. It remains to be seen how the Indians plan to align their new-look infield, but using DeRosa at second base with Jhonny Peralta at third base and Asdrubal Cabrera at shortstop would likely be the best setup defensively. He was so good last year....what does this mean the Cubs will do?

Cubs Sign 2B Miles to 2-Year, $4.9 M Deal

The Chicago Sun Times reports that the Cubs have agreed to terms with Aaron Miles on a two-year, $4.9 million contract. St. Louis cut Miles loose because they didn't want to pay him around $2.5 million via arbitration, so it's a surprise that he's able to get a two-year deal. Chicago already had infield depth with Ronny Cedeno on the bench, so signing Miles seemingly could lead to the Cubs shopping Mark DeRosa.

Cubs Close to Sending Marquis to Rockies

Tuesday, December 30, 2008

The Rockies are looking to add depth to their rotation. Instead of getting caught up in a bidding war for the likes of Tim Redding, who was nontendered by Washington and suddenly has a handful of teams running up his price, they could turn their attention to a more proven commodity such as Cubs right-hander Jason Marquis. Marquis also is the other guy in a rotation but has proven to be durable, working at least 167 innings each of the past five seasons. And with the Cubs anxious to move him to ease their rotation overload, they would seem likely to eat roughly half the $9,875,000 he is guaranteed in 2009.

The Rumored Deal involves Marquis to the Rockies for SP Luis Vizcaino

Cubs Looking at 2 Japanese pitchers

The Cubs are considering inviting two Japanese relief pitchers to spring training. The pitcher they're most interested in is Ken Kadokura, a 35-year-old right-hander, and they also had a tryout for 34-year-old left-hander Shigeki Noguchi. The Yomiuri Giants released both veterans after the 2008 season. Kadokura, who spent most of '08 in the minors, has a career record of 76-82, with 10 saves and a 4.36 ERA. The Cubs believe having another Japanese-speaking player around will help Fukudome feel more comfortable.

Deng's Ankle Injury Looks Severe

And there goes John Paxson's newest investment. Luol Deng left in the Bulls roll over loss to the Heat last night in the 4th quarter after severely spraining his ankle. Coach Vinny Del Negro has ruled Deng out for the next two games possibly more. Deng signed a big contract in the off season but does not seem to be a good fit with the Bulls future star Derrick Rose...maybe this is a sign Pax should go.

Randy Johnson Signs 1 Year/ 8 Million dollar contract

Friday, December 26, 2008

Randy Johnson has reportedly signed a 1- year, 8 million dollar deal with the Giants, making him the 2nd oldest active player in the majors, with the oldest being Jamie Moyer. This continues the many offseason moves we have seen thus far, especially with the New York Yankees giving Mark Texiera the biggest contract ever signed.

Sosa Wants Back In?

Free agent Sammy Sosa said he's open to returning to the majors if someone makes him an offer.

Sosa probably could have gotten a job last year, but he wanted regular playing time and at least $7 million. Sosa previously said that it was intention to retire following the World Baseball Classic, but he's in shape and apparently hoping for another opportunity.

LeBron James to Debut "Chalk Shoe"

To launch his newest sneaker, LeBron James and 20,000 fans will turn Quicken Loans Arena into an indoor winter wonderland.

When the Cleveland Cavaliers face the Washington Wizards on Christmas night, James will be wearing a "chalk" version of his signature Nike shoe, a tribute to his pregame ritual of tossing and blowing hand rosin into the air above the scorer's table before he takes the court.

Nike will provide packets of confetti for fans to throw along with James, who began the routine a few years ago.

The "Chalk" shoe is the ninth edition of James' Zoom LeBron VI line. Last month, he wore a "Big Apple" model of the shoe when the Cavs played in New York. The new shoe includes a silhouette of James' chalk toss on the tongue.

James' foundation will also host 25 families at the game. They will be treated with gifts and a pregame visit from the superstar.

Jay-Z and Mary J Blidge Sued!

Tuesday, December 23, 2008

Jermaine Jumpp and Michael C. Adams of New Jersey are suing Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige for allegedly stealing a beat they produced.

According to TMZ.com, Jumpp and Adams claim in a federal lawsuit that they handed a CD to the "office" of producer Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins with a song titled "On My Grind."

Four years later, Blige recorded her hit song "Enough Cryin'," produced by Jerkins, which Jumpp and Adams contend sound too similar to their song.

It is not yet clear what Jay-Z's role in the suit is, although the two artists have had a close relationship for years. Earlier this year, Mary J. Blige and Jay-Z embarked on the immensely successful "Heart of the City" tour.

Cubs Show Interest in Derek Lowe

Tuesday, December 16, 2008

SI.com's Jon Heyman believes the Cubs are showing interest in free agent Derek Lowe.

Lowe would prefer to pitch on the East Coast, but if the Yankees and Andy Pettitte can work out their differences, there might not be a AL or NL East contender willing to give him the dollars he wants. The Red Sox have some interest, but would probably offer just three years. The Orioles and Nationals could certainly use him, but Lowe is said to want to join a contender. The Cubs might have a legitimate shot if they're willing to spend $15 million per year. First, they'd likely have to dump Jason Marquis.

Cubs Sign Gathwright to 1-year Deal

The Cubs signed a left-handed-hitting outfielder on Tuesday, but it's probably not who you expected. The Cubs picked up some speed when they signed outfielder Joey Gathright to a one-year, $800,000 contract. Gathright is not the big-bopper type outfielder Cubs manager Lou Piniella wanted for the middle of the order, but someone who will be handy during double switches, pinch-running, pinch-hitting and able to play all three outfield positions. He was non-tendered by the Kansas City Royals on Friday after batting .254 in 105 games this past season with no homers and 22 RBIs. Piniella knows him well. Gathright played for him in Tampa Bay and stole 20 bases in 2005. He swiped 22 total in 2006 with the Rays and Royals, but this season was bothered by a bone bruise in his right shoulder.

Bulls Looking into C Miller

With the Kings' woeful record and Spencer Hawes' vast improvement, Brad Miller's exit could come sooner than expected. Numerous team sources said the Kings will continue to test the market for Miller leading up to the February trade deadline. The approach, it appears, will be one of high ambition and low motivation; the Kings are far from desperate to move Miller but more than willing to do so soon if the deal comes with enough payoff.

With a growing list of teams such as Miami, Chicago and Charlotte using undersized centers out of necessity, Miller will draw interest.

Cubs Looking at OF Gathright

Outfielder Joey Gathright has popped up on the Cubs' radar

Gathright could be added to the roster this week and compete for a spot on the Cubs' bench. He was non-tendered by the Kansas City Royals on Friday after batting .254 in 105 games this past season with no homers and 22 RBIs. The left-handed-hitting outfielder was 4-for-14 (.286) as a pinch-hitter.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella knows Gathright well. The speedy outfielder played for Piniella in Tampa Bay and stole 20 bases in 2005. He swiped 22 total in 2006 with the Rays and Royals, but was bothered by a bone bruise in his right shoulder this season.

Romo and Witten Silence Soap Opera Talk....For Now

Throughout the entire week Tony Romo and Jason Witten have been criticized by Terrell Owens as he is complaining about, what a suprise, that he is not getting the ball enough. Owens thinks the two who happen to be good friends off the field are "scheming" against him. Philadelphia Eagles right tackle Jon Runyan told ESPN, "It's already happened here. We know exactly what they're going through. The problem is that divides the team. People are drawing lines and taking sides." The situation going on here seems to be like a one man circus that happens to travel to wherever T.O. plays. The Cowboys beat the Giants tonight 20-8 and Romo threw for 244 yards with 2 touchdowns and 0 Interceptions while Witten 5 catches for 44 yards and T.O. had a sub par 3 catches for 38 yards. It will be interesting to see how T.O. reacts in practice this week.

Sam Bradford Wins Heisman

Sam Bradford

Sam Bradford now joins in elite group of college players known as the Heisman Winners, and hes only a sophmore. Bradford of the Oklahoma Sooners grew up as a Sooner fan and played almost every sport as a kid, golf, basketball, baseball and football. He never focused mainly on football and up until his junior year of high school his dad thought he was going to become a golfer. During his junior year of high school he started to get more attention from football and realized that he could actually go somewhere with it. That next year he got offers from several schools, one which happened to be Oklahoma. The first person to congratulate the young Oklahoma quarterback would be his competition in the title game, Tim Tebow. This season Bradford has a passer rating of 186.29, 4,464 yards and 48 touchdowns.

Yanks get CC, but at a costly price

The New York Yankees have been known for their outrageously expensive deals with players they have high interest in. CC Sabathia followed the "norm" of the Yankees as they spent 161 million dollars on him in what is being called a 7- year deal. This is one of the biggest dealest every signed by any type of athlete and its insane to think that he is getting payed a minimum of 23 million dollars a year (excluding signing bonuses, etc...). Lets hope the Yankees money will pay off and CC has a solid year.

Suns trade Diaw and Bell get Richardson

In a two team deal the Suns have officially traded Boris Diaw and Raja Bell for 2 time dunk winner Jason Richardson from the Bobcats. Also involved in the trade was Sean Singletary who went to the Bobcats and Jared Dudly who went to Phoenix along with a 2010 second round draft pick from the Bobcats. Steve Nash is very upset by this trade as he describes himself as, "emotionally drained." Diaw and Bell were two of Nash's best friends on the team. The team is having one of its worst seasons in years and GM Steve Kerr was looking to shake things up with what he describes as in "explosive scorer" in Richardson.

Pads GM says Peavy Deal Now Up To Cubs

Padres GM Kevin Towers said there's essentially a Jake Peavy deal in place if the Cubs are willing to sign off on it.Towers has been in contact with the Phillies and Orioles and may have agreements with both of them in what would be a three- or four-team Peavy deal. Towers did say there might be some fighting over the players the Padres would get in return from the Cubs. If the Orioles are involved, it's very likely that they'd get Felix Pie from the Cubs and send Garrett Olson to San Diego. THIS WOULD BE F*CKIN AWSOME....WE COULD GET HIM IN THE NEXT 3 DAYS!!

Rumor: Rays new 3rd team in Peavy Deal?

A wild rumor making the rounds is that the Rays might replace the Orioles as the third team to facilitate a trade that would send ace starter Jake Peavy from the Padres to the Cubs. Reportedly, the Rays would acquire veteran Brian Giles form the Padres to play right field. However, that seems doubtful, though, as Giles is a native San Diegan and has no desire to waive his no-trade clause. Regardless of how it shakes out, Padres GM Kevin Towers is determined to get five players back in any deal and the Orioles want both center fielder Felix Pie and shortstop Ronny Cedeno from the Cubs in any deal.

Source: Sox swapping Dye for Reds' Bailey

A source told the Dayton Daily News that the White Sox and Reds have completed a swap involving Jermaine Dye and Homer bailey. Minutes later another source told the Chicago Tribune that there's been no Jermaine Dye-for-Homer Bailey trade agreed to between the Reds and White Sox. The Tribune reports that the White Sox would want more than Bailey in a deal and the Reds have concerns about absorbing Dye's entire salary. The Reds might be able to sign Pat Burrell for about the same 2009 salary as the $11.5 million that Dye is due.
